On July 15, 2020, I presented the Pons Method to FIFA, a methodology I had painstakingly crafted to revolutionize football training and performance. During the presentation, I encountered the then-young Director of Innovation.

Barely in his thirties, the age when many are still playing, he occupied a pivotal role but lacked understanding of my work. His dismissive focus on the VAR, SMART balls, and turf technologies—while dismissing new training methodologies—reflects a systemic gap: innovation in training often takes a backseat to more marketable technology. This raises a pressing question: shouldn’t such positions be held by people with deep-rooted experience—former coaches, esteemed directors of sport—who intimately understand high-level training, management, and innovation?

Institutional Blind Spots: Performance or Appearances?

Sadly, my interaction with UEFA as a Pro Licence member yielded no response. My own federation, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, after a one-hour presentation of Pons Method guidelines, simply stated, “I don’t train like that.” Their dismissal reflected not the merit of the methodology, but the institutional inertia that resists transformative change. So, does innovation truly resonate when entrenched approaches remain unchallenged?

Would my journey, investing time and resources with zero return, be different if these organizations were truly driven by performance? Or do politics and superficial appearances hold sway? Too often, unprepared individuals occupy positions of influence, making decisions that shape the future of football without the depth of experience necessary to understand what it takes to train, manage, or innovate at the highest levels. The Relentless Pursuit of InnovationI developed the Pons Method during lockdown in Thailand—a time when coaches, typically consumed by the relentless rhythm of their roles, had a rare opportunity to reflect and innovate.

My dedication, born of a profound love for football and a desire to maximize performance with minimal resources, led me to this methodology. It optimizes processes, maximizes productivity, and builds efficiency—all with the player at its core.

Comparisons have been made between the Pons Method and the Coerver Method. Both emphasize repetition and correction as foundational pillars. However, unlike other methodologies, which stem predominantly from the perspectives of physical trainers, the Pons Method is deeply rooted in tactical, mental, and technical synergy.

Before its innovation, analytical training was dismissed as “useless for professionals.” Yet, it has become integral in enriching game models, developing timing, synergy, and patterns in players.

The Pons Method takes these elements and magnifies their impact exponentially. The result is not just a methodology but a movement that systematically improves individuals and teams alike.Beyond the ResistanceYes, the story of the Pons Method has been met with resistance and dismissal from some quarters, but this only underscores the need for continual evolution in the sport.

AI marks the dawn of a new era in football, offering the capacity to extend methodologies and insights far beyond what was previously possible.

The Pons Method, rooted in innovation and deep, player-centered development, will only continue to grow and adapt. To those who innovate and to the players—the true protagonists of the game—know that football’s transformation has only just begun. We stand at the cusp of an era where the intersection of AI, data, and human expertise can truly elevate the beautiful game. For those willing to embrace it, the future holds infinite possibilities.Moving ForwardI may be in Phuket, but my commitment remains unwavering.

The Pons Method is a living testament to the power of innovation, perseverance, and love for football. Thank you to the players, the staff, and all who recognize that every new approach must be recorded, studied, and embraced. The future of football deserves nothing less than our best
